What does local food mean – and why does food origin matter?

Local, domestic and seasonal food often appear in the same conversation, but they do not mean the same thing. Clear distinctions help us assess origin without oversimplified claims.

Local is not always the same as domestic

Domestic food is produced within your country. Local food refers to food produced and consumed nearby, but “nearby” depends on context and has no single universal distance limit.

A product can be domestic without being local to your region. Conversely, a product made by a local company may contain ingredients from elsewhere. Check origin product by product.

How to assess food origin

Check the ingredient’s country of origin
Distinguish production, manufacturing and packing locations
Choose seasonally when domestic produce is readily available
Ask about the producer or supplier when information is missing

Why does origin matter?

Origin information makes the food chain more transparent and can help direct purchases towards domestic producers. Seasonality can also bring ingredients to the table when they are at their best.

A short transport distance does not describe the full environmental impact. Production, storage, packaging and food waste matter too. A sound choice combines origin, quality, season and real need.
